Sweden Day 8 – A Rainy Day of Heritage, Friendship and Home-Cooked Comfort

We woke up to a rainy morning and sleepy faces. The plan for the day was to visit the Kvek Garden, a farmhouse from the medieval Swedish era. Mallin, Kerstin, and Ellanor came to pick us up at 9:30 a.m., and we set off on a lovely drive.

The farm was a large enclosed square. One side housed the main residence where the joint family lived. Two sides consisted of storage rooms and animal stables, while the fourth side was occupied by the servants’ quarters. The main house was spacious enough to accommodate both the servants and the animals when the winters became unbearably cold.

Back in the 17th century, until 1864, education was neither compulsory nor accessible to everyone. Children from farming families were simply expected to learn a simplified version of the Bible called the ABC-boken. The church would visit once a week to check on the children’s progress in learning the Bible.

After spending a lovely time at the farm, we returned to Bredsand by noon. We made pav bhaji for lunch and enjoyed a hearty meal. After a refreshing afternoon nap, we invited our Swedish friends over to play some indoor games while it continued to rain outside. Oliver, Oscar, Katarina, and Albin arrived at 5 p.m. with UNO and Monopoly. We had a wonderful time playing, bonding, and munching on some bakarwadi.

After they left, we made pasta for dinner.
